SNC Advances to Next Phase of U.S. Army FTUAS Program with Voly-T UAV

SPARKS, Nev. (March 2, 2023) - U.S. Army selects Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) to provide its Voly-T unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for the Future Tactical Unmanned Aircraft Systems (FTUAS) Increment 2 program. The Voly-T offers a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) solution to address the program’s need for a rapidly deployable, runway-independent, unmanned, reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition system.

“SNC is committed to delivering a future unmanned system with the payload, range and endurance that our military needs,” said Tim Owings executive vice president of SNC’s Mission Solutions and Technologies (MST) business area. “We are proud to continue partnering with the Army on this important effort in support of the warfighter.”

The company’s VTOL solution has a small operational footprint and can easily maneuver difficult terrain and contested spaces for tactical resupply missions. The Voly-T’s turnkey intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) system also supports the increased demand for immediate situational awareness on the battlefield – providing commanders with a dedicated, rapidly-taskable UAV to see, track and understand critical elements of the battlespace and support.

Built for endurance, the Voly-T provides the redundancy and durability required to complete the mission. It is capable of handling heavy payloads with the ability to simultaneously carry up to 50 pounds of cargo, including an ISR or sensor payload option. The system also features redundant lift motors and avionics with reliable propulsion and an onboard engine restart for automatic damage tolerance.  In addition, it is designed with a modular, open architecture system, allowing for quick and efficient integration of new payloads and capabilities.

“We are leveraging our 60-year heritage as an aerospace leader and prime integrator to create a world where it is possible to support any industry – by delivering anything, anywhere, anytime,” said Owings. “SNC designed the Voly-T series with the flexibility needed to meet the growing demand for rapid delivery of critical assets and offers the ability to conduct ISR missions.”

SNC incorporated its proven open architecture systems, sensor integrations and ISR capabilities into the Voly-T UAV design to deliver a rapidly configurable unmanned ISR VTOL solution for multi-domain operations. The company is also drawing from the extensive UAV expertise of its subsidiary, Kutta Technologies Inc., to ensure compliance with DO-178 and interoperability standards, creating the redundancy and durability required to complete the toughest DOD missions. SNC is pleased to be awarded this base contract and is confident that the Voly-T is the right solution for FTUAS Increment 2.
