NASA's exploration plans for the moon, Mars and beyond created an immediate need for materials science and technology research to enable safe human travel and work on future lunar exploration and long-duration missions. Part of the research requires the use of lunar regolith and Martian soil simulants for materials experiments, prototype testing and dust mitigation of transportation equipment, advanced life support systems and in situ resource processing.
Researchers, educators, students and interested commercial parties may purchase simulant from 15 tons of JSC-1A distributed by ORBITEC.
ORBITEC also produced eight tons of JSC Mars-1A, a Martian soil simulant that approximates the spectral reflectance of the bright areas on Mars.

JSC MARS-1A SIMULANT
JSC Mars-1A is a palagonite tephra collected from the slopes of the Pu’u Nene cinder cone on the Island of Hawaii. Palagonitic tephra from this cone has been repeatedly cited as a close spectral analog to the bright regions of Mars. The chemical composition is compared to that of a typical Mars surface sample analyzed at the Viking lander 1 site.

JSC LUNAR-1A SIMULANT
JSC-1A standard lunar mare regolith simulant is the 1 mm and lower particle size simulant most commonly used by NASA. It has been produced to support NASA’s future exploration of the lunar surface. JSC-1A was mined from a volcanic ash deposit located in the San Francisco volcano field near Flagstaff, Arizona. The simulant shipment includes an MSDS with chemical and mineral characteristics.
