EXAMPLE OF SPACECRAFT STRESS A Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is defined as an orbit around Earth extending from sea-level to an altitude up to 2000 km (1240 miles). Given the rapid orbital decay of objects below 200 km, the commonly accepted definition for LEO is between 160 - 2000 km (100 - 1240 miles). All Space Shuttle and ISS missions are considered LEO.
